Lynne Featherstone MP visits the JAN Trust

Lynne Featherstone MP discussing The JAN Trust’s work with women who attend the English language class. Lynne Featherstone MP on Friday visited the JAN trust – a local non-profit organisation which aims to support and empower women; particularly those in troubled or difficult situations.

The Liberal Democrat MP had a meeting with the trust founder and director, Rafaat Mughal and project manager Sajda Mughal. They discussed the Trust’s campaign against forced marriage, and the techniques they are using to help and raise awareness – such as holding workshops in schools and setting up a direct phone line that women at risk can call in confidence.

The Trust are also working on numerous other campaigns, including tackling hate crime.

After the discussion, the MP for Hornsey and Wood Green met around 20 of the women who use the Trust’s services. They told the local MP how they have benefited from the English lessons provided by the Trust, and about their future plans and aspirations.

Following the visit, Lynne Featherstone MP commented:

“It was encouraging to hear about the wide range of work being undertaken by the JAN Trust, particularly in these tough economic times when funding is scarce.

“The women learning English at the Trust seemed very happy and positive – and from the conversations I had with them, it is clear that the lessons are really helping with their language skills. It was like a mini United Nations, with women from all over the world – Vietnam, Iran and Poland, to name a few!

“The Trust are working on and raising awareness of really important issues, and I wish them all the best with their campaigns and work in the future.”

One Million Jobs

Here’s my latest column for the Ham and High – also available on Lib Dem Voice

The Liberal Democrats in Government have helped businesses create over one million jobs. Now we are working to create one million more!

Work is so important to individuals and families in the UK. It pays the bills, gives us purpose and fulfilment, and provides security for our long term futures.

I was so happy when I got my first job with a small design and advertising company in the West End – and my first pay packet. I remember feeling so grown up as I caught the tube to work along with the rest of the world. That sense of a daily somewhere to be and something to do has always been incredibly important to me – as it is to everyone.

Work is particularly important for young people leaving school or university. I regularly visit schools in the local area – and am always so pleased to see youngsters with such ambition and enthusiasm. We should be doing all we can to give them the best chance to succeed – which will benefit our economy too.

But – it’s not long since youth unemployment was rising fast under Labour, leaving so many young people without the opportunity to get on in life.

That’s why creating more jobs – particularly for young people – during these tough economic times is top of the Lib Dem’s list of priorities.

The million jobs we have helped create span a number of different industries. We’ve supported industries such as manufacturing by investing £5.5bn extra into science, high-tech manufacturing and renewable energy – in turn creating thousands of new jobs. £15.3bn has been invested into creating building jobs, which will improve Britain’s roads, railways and housing.

Our strategy is working. On top of the million more private sector jobs, youth unemployment is down. Here in Hornsey and Wood Green, youth unemployment has fallen by over a quarter from May 2010 to now.

Overall unemployment in the constituency is also down from 5.2% to 4.5%.

That means hundreds more people in this constituency have been employed since the Lib Dems entered the Coalition Government!

There has also been great success with apprenticeships. In Hornsey and Wood Green alone, 530 new apprenticeships have been created – so now there are three times as many apprentices as 2010!

In order to create a million more jobs for a stronger economy, we are turning our attention to these apprenticeships, and looking to continue the great work. In short – we want to double the number of businesses that take on apprentices.

I am planning on holding an event in the constituency, which will attempt to match up potential employers with apprentices, helping more of our local youngsters get in to work.

Everyone can get involved in this. Just visit the campaign website at www.amillionjobs.org to register your support for our national campaign for more apprenticeships, and to find out more information.

Supporting our High Streets

Here’s my most recent Muswell Flyer Article on supporting our local high streets

One of the best features of Crouch End, Highgate and Muswell Hill are their unique high streets. Instead of endless chain stores, we have a rich range of diverse independent shops, which add so much character to our local area – and I want to keep it that way!

We are going through tough economic times, and without the support of multinational head offices, many of our independent retailers are struggling.

The Labour-run Council hasn’t helped, either. They’ve raised parking charges on the high streets to a whopping £3 an hour – which puts off potential customers who want to stop and browse. One local resident contacted me and said: “I do not shop on the high streets in Highgate and Muswell Hill because of the ridiculous parking rates.”

A local independent retailer also contacted me and said: “I run 3 shops which have suffered badly from the huge increase in parking charges.”

That’s why the Lib Dems have been campaigning for reduced parking charges and for 30 minutes free parking across the Borough. The campaign has gained a great deal of momentum. The traders had already put together a 5000 strong petition calling for lower charges.

We now have a very large number of signatures in support of 30 minutes free parking. You can add your name here: http://eepurl.com/tvXkH.

Residents have been vocal in their support. Local resident Denis Jones said: ‘I feel that it would help trade in the Broadway. If there was 30 min free parking I would use the shops instead of going to free parking trading estates.’

The ruling Labour Group at Haringey Council remain stubborn. They have refused to change their parking charges to date. It is such a shame that they will not listen to residents and common sense arguments. Local residents and retailers really deserve better.

Nonetheless, the Lib Dems and I will carry on campaigning and pushing the Council to do more to help our local independent shops and high streets.

In other news – I have also been running a competition in my constituency to find the best local independent shops. The voting has now closed, but the results still have to be announced.

This will happen on Saturday 29th June (from 11am – 3pm) at a summer fete style event on the forecourt of Hornsey Town Hall. There will also be a draw to see which lucky voter will win £100 to spend in the shop they voted for.

A number of our favourite shops and community groups have already agreed to have a stall and exhibit at the event, and there will also be games and face painting for children, snacks, music and picnic space.

This will be a fantastic community event, which will help promote and publicise many of our best independent stores. I hope to see as many of you there as possible!

Lynne Featherstone MP welcomes launch of Lib Dem ‘Million Jobs’ campaign

A million jobs infographicLynne Featherstone MP has today welcomed the Liberal Democrat Million Jobs Campaign, which was launched by Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg.

More than one million private sector jobs have been created since the Coalition Government came to power. The Liberal Democrats now want to create a million more.

This will build on what Liberal Democrats in the Coalition Government have already achieved. Youth unemployment is down, and Business Secretary Vince Cable has overseen a record rise in apprenticeships, including 530 new apprentices in Lynne Featherstone’s constituency of Hornsey and Wood Green.

The million jobs have been created via investment in industry and employer incentives. To support jobs in manufacturing, for instance, £5.5bn extra has been invested into science, high-tech manufacturing and renewable energy.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander has introduced £2,000 cash back on National Insurance contributions for employers who take on more staff.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Lynne Featherstone said:

“The Liberal Democrats are building a stronger economy in a fairer society, enabling everyone to get on in life.

“That’s why Liberal Democrats in the Coalition Government have helped businesses create more than one million private sector jobs, and now we’re working to help them create a million more.

“I look forward to working with local businesses, community groups and schools and colleges to turn this ambition into reality in Haringey.”

Lynne Featherstone MP launches constituency wide Annual Survey

a pile of the MP’s annual surveysLynne Featherstone MP has launched her 2013 Annual Survey. Liberal Democrat volunteers are currently delivering the surveys to people across the constituency of Hornsey and Wood Green.

The survey asks residents for their views on local and national issues, and whether they have any problems they would like the local MP’s assistance with.

In addition, the survey offers residents the chance to sign the Liberal Democrat petition to protect our local health services.

Last year, the survey drew several thousand responses. Hundreds of issues raised by residents were followed up on by the MP and her casework team.

Residents can also fill in this year’s survey online (see below)

Commenting, Lynne Featherstone MP said:

“The annual survey is a great way for residents to have their voices heard on matters ranging from national Lib Dem policy to our local Lib Dem campaigns.

“We all know that the Labour-run Council are not very good at keeping our roads and pavements safe, or keeping our area tidy. That’s why we ask residents whether they have any issues with litter, damaged pavements or potholes on their road.

“All completed surveys are looked at and we will attempt to resolve any issues raised. I hope as many residents as possible take the opportunity to fill it in!”

Lynne Featherstone MP celebrates World School Milk Day

Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, last week visited a local playgroup as part of World School Milk Day.

The Liberal Democrat MP spoke to children at the Salvation Army playgroup in Wood Green about the benefits of milk, and where it comes from. To mark the occasion, the MP and the children raised and enjoyed a glass of milk each!

The day is organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and is celebrated in over 30 countries around the world. Cool Milk, one of the UK’s leading school milk suppliers, promotes and funds the day in the UK.

After the event, Lynne Featherstone commented:

“I was delighted to get involved in World School Milk Day, and to visit one of the playgroups in my constituency.

“It’s great that 1.5 million children in the UK already receive free milk every day – but it would be better if the figure was higher. I wish Cool Milk all the best for their future events and campaigns.”

Lynne Featherstone MP takes part in ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’

Lynne Featherstone MP (Centre) with Barclays and Macmillan staff in Barclays, Wood GreenOn Friday last week, Lynne Featherstone MP visited two coffee mornings which were being hosted in Hornsey and Wood Green. The Liberal Democrat MP firstly dropped in on residents at Minster Walk in Hornsey, and then visited a local Barclays Branch in Wood Green.

The coffee morning at Minster Walk was hosted by local resident Phyliss Grant. The MP spoke with residents at Minster Walk about their own experiences with Cancer, and also took the opportunity to discuss a mixture of local and national issues. At Barclays, Lynne Featherstone spoke to staff about the coffee morning, which they take part in every year.

Both coffee mornings were being held as part of Macmillan’s ‘world’s biggest coffee morning’ event. Macmillan runs the event every year as a fundraiser. They ask people across the UK – and sometimes further afield – to hold a coffee morning, and collect donations. This year, over £10million has been raised to assist Macmillan in helping people with Cancer.

Following the event, Lynne Featherstone MP said:

“I was delighted to take part in the coffee morning fundraiser. Macmillan is a fantastic organisation, providing invaluable help and support to cancer sufferers.

“We face huge health inequalities in Haringey, and it is reassuring to know that organisations like Macmillan are there to support those in need, regardless of where they’re from.

“I wish the organisation the very best for all of their future activities.”

Wood Green ‘open for business’ hears local MP

Photo of Rehanaz Noor with Lynne Featherstone MPLynne Featherstone visited the Noel Park, Wood Green branch of Barclays Bank on Friday 11th May and heard from staff how they are supporting local businesses. She urged the bank to engage with the community to ensure that local people who want to set up a business have every chance to succeed.

Lynne Featherstone, Liberal Democrat MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, commented:

“It is encouraging to hear about businesses in Wood Green that are succeeding and growing despite the difficult economic climate. Banks need to give the right support to local businesses and that is why talking to them is so important. Cash flow is clearly a problem for many businesses and that is where high-street banks can make a real difference if they offer the right support.

“The coalition government has delivered lower taxes and less red tape. They will help get business moving again.

“Vince Cable’s government department also announced last week that the government-backed Angel Co-fund has made its first investment in new businesses. The £50million fund aims to support new small businesses in partnership with private investors.”

Rehanaz Noor, Barclays Bank manager of the Noel Park branch commented:

“Our commitment to the area is demonstrated by the fact that we have made a major investment in refurbishing the Noel Park branch. Our small business customers have remained resilient throughout the downturn with many adapting and diversifying to ensure they remain successful and most have survived and are starting to look at growth opportunities now. The start up market has been vibrant with many people taking the opportunity to start their own businesses using the skills they have.”

MP Lynne visits Wood Green boxing club

Lynne Featherstone MP has met coaches and students at a local boxing club, to find out more about their inspirational classes for local young people.

The Hornsey and Wood Green MP met the owner of Wood Green Boxing Club, Sedat Sag, and other coaches to find out how boxing can deliver benefits to the local community. Sedat and his team of coaches provide classes for young people from their early teens, right through to early adulthood. The club also provides a space for older people to spar.

Lynne watched two sparring rounds, and a busy class which was well attended by local youngsters.

Lynne Featherstone MP comments,

“The energy at the club was fantastic. It’s clear that Sedat and the coaches have a real passion for what they do, and want to make a real difference in Wood Green.”

Liberal Democrats this week give cash boost to Haringey's pensioners

Lynne Featherstone MP and Wood Green Pensioner Augustus Olufunwa who will see a boost to his pension in the new financial yearPensioners in Haringey are this week getting a better deal in their retirement, with a weekly increase of £4.50, compared to increases under Labour of a measly 75p, thanks to Lynne Featherstone MP and her Liberal Democrat colleagues in Government.

Liberal Democrats are also making sure future increases in pensions don’t fall behind, by restoring the all-important earnings link with pensions after 30 years. On top of that, Liberal Democrats have stopped Labour’s planned cut to cold weather payments, worth £25 a week, to make sure pensioners are not left out in the cold.

Lynne Featherstone MP comments:

“Pensioners have had it tough for a long time, with measly increase to their pensions year on year. Indeed one year, Labour increased the pension by a pitiful 75 pence.

“That’s a disgrace, and that’s why Liberal Democrats in Government have made sure pensioners get a better deal, despite the tough economic times.
“Haringey’s senior citizens will this week see a long overdue cash boost of £4.50 to their pension. And by restoring the earnings link, we have also made sure that pensions don’t fall behind like they have for the past thirty years.

“Respect, dignity and security: that’s what pensioners deserve, and that’s what we are delivering.”
