My LibDem colleagues standing for Stroud Green ward – Cllr Ed Butcher, Cllr Richard Wilson and Katherine Reece who is the candidate replacing Cllr Laura Edge – were interviewed by stroudgreen.org. The discussion in the video ranges over their reasons for standings, their priorities for Haringey, their favourite things about Stroud Green, final thoughts and how to get in touch. Congratulations to stroudgreen.org for this – bringing politics to the people!

Total Politics 'make your mind up' in which I sing and dance (nearly)!
When you get a phone call saying will you be in a little film to encourage voting and say yes – be afraid – be very afraid. Here is the Total Politcs film – ‘Make your mind up‘.
I'm a local girl
I am a genuine local girl – from Highate Primary school, to Muswell Hill Youth Club, to my aunt’s net curtaining shop in Wood Green High Road – where my mother used to drop me sometimes to play in the back while she went to work – to getting married at the Civic Centre.
In this film I talk about my roots in the constituency and some of the issues I have taken up on behalf of the 28,000 people I have helped over the years.
So here’s the film:

Don't forget to register to vote!
Tomorrow’s the deadline to get on the register to vote – but there’s still time to get the form from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk, print it off and put it in the post first class or drop it round to the council in person.
This is shaping up to be one of most exciting general elections we’ve had in Britain – so make sure you don’t miss out on your chance to take part!
Tories don't know what to do about Nick Clegg! We do – we agree with Nick!
Yes – we have to keep our heads in the midst of all this heady stuff, remember one swallow doesn’t make you know what – and make sure we all carry on campaigning until we drop.
Meanwhile – Nick just has to carry on being himself and telling the people about our policies in the next Sky Leader Debate on Thursday. That’s all that really happened last Thursday – and when the nation finally got a fair look at Nick Clegg – they clearly liked what they saw and heard.
The Tories appear to have gone into a complete panic. ‘Knives are out for Clegg’ the headlines said. I see this morning that has transmuted into William Hague threatening a European superstate if the Liberal Democrats were to become the Government.
Well firstly this just smacks of sheer desperation and secondly it is not true – just sabre rattling.
But the real point is that the Tories still don’t get it. They are trotting out the old tired politics, the same old lines of attack, the yesterday approach to today’s problems.
If they looked squarely at what happened in the debate last week – then they have to know that returning to dog-whistle politics and banging the EU drum is not going to be the game-changer they need.
So the Conservatives clearly don’t agree with Nick.
Maybe that’s where they’re going wrong!
Young people at the Roundhouse give proportional representation the thumbs up!
The Roundhouse has a whole weekend of engaging young people in politics – from political debate, to graffiti walls and musical, theatrical and film entertainment. Do you feel counted?
On a fantastically sunny day – it was rewarding that so many young people had turned up for this hustings on political reform. I represented the LibDems, Meg Hillier (Labour), Antonia Cox(Tories). The Legal correspondent for the Guardian, Afua Hirsch and Fumi Abari, 16 year old member of the UK Youth Parliament added real interest and different viewpoints.
What was so fantastic – were the contributions from the floor. As Youth Spokesperson for the LibDems I am always banging on about the misrepresentation by the media of all young people as trainee criminals. My experience is always that they are positive, good and want to get on in life.
The hustings was chaired by Evan Davis (Dragon’s Den and the Today program – there’s a mixture). The first half of the hustings was about voting systems and the second half about who can vote.
We all gave our views on both of the subjects and in each case Evan Davis took a show of hands at the end of the discussion as to whose position the young audience agreed with.
On voting – proportional representation won hands down with about 80% of the vote.
On lowering the voting age to 16 – 90% were in favour.
Both Liberal Democrat propositions!
No wonder Nick Clegg today is reported in the press as going on the campaign trail to appeal to young people today!
Thank you for the opportunity of a lifetime
Here’s my latest column for the Ham & High:
I never imagined when I was at Highgate Primary School, playing kiss chase in Highgate Woods, going to Muswell Hill Youth Club, being dropped at my aunt’s net curtaining shop in Wood Green High Road to play in the back whilst my mother went to work – or even later – when I was getting married at Haringey Civic Centre – that I would become the MP for Hornsey & Wood Green.
It makes travelling around the area rather strange now, because it’s not just my home but also my place of work and even if ‘off duty’ I see the signs of work all around – such as the 603 bus route I spent many years campaigning for with residents, the re-opened police station front counter, the double yellow lines to make a junction safer, the council flat that needed nagging to get repaired, the green space saved from over-development and so on.
It has been a great pleasure – and a privilege – to have had the opportunity to move on from being a councillor and a London Assembly member to having the platform of Parliament from which to help and run those campaigns.
I make it 28,000 plus people that have got in touch and I’ve helped over the years. Across them have been all manners of issues and questions and problems and challenges. There have also been some repeated themes. Often when people come to me it’s because they are angry – angry at how the government or the council has let them down, ignored them or forced an unwelcome decision on them.
From the war in Iraq, being complicit in torture, closing our vital local Post Offices and giving our schools less funding than over the border in Hackney through to the threats to the Whittington’s A&E – Labour have not understood how important are our principles and how vital the fabric of our life.
Even after all the campaigning to save the Whittington’s A&E, we still have the comments from Labour Health Secretary Andy Burnham only last week which led the Daily Express to report that, “Labour believes closing maternity units and A&E departments at local hospitals is the “right thing to do” to improve NHS care.”
With all our campaigning we may have frightened the government into saying nice words about the Whittington A&E at the moment, but with that attitude from right at the top in the NHS, what chances the future for the A&E under Labour? Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has stated unequivocally that he will not let London North Central NHS close the Whittington A&E – making him the only Party Leader to do so.
On the Whittington, as on many other issues, there is still much to be done. I know some people are cynical about politicians who only pop up just before an election, suddenly declaring their commitment to an area and making promises for the future.
Well in my case – you can judge me not just on my promises for the future, but my record too. If you take a look at my website,www.LynneFeatherstone.org, you can read my blog and news releases from over the years – in and out of election time! – with more details about many of the issues the 28,000 have raised, the questions I’ve asked in Parliament and the campaigns I’ve led or helped with.
I’m not standing for re-election promising that I’ll start doing things for our community; I’m standing for re-election because I want to continue winning victories for our community.
It has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure to serve the people of Hornsey & Wood Green. I remember the night in May 2005 when I was elected to Parliament pledging in my acceptance speech to be the hardest working MP this constituency had ever seen. And I hope that people feel that I have delivered on that pledge.
Local Liberal Democrats visit resident let down over housing repairs
The reality of Labour’s broken promise to install new kitchens, bathrooms and windows in all council homes by 2010 became clear this week when local Liberal Democrats met with a resident who will have to wait another two years until any work starts on her home.
Lynne Featherstone and Cllr Robert Gorrie visited Mrs Jethwa from Hutton Court in Stroud Green to see first-hand how her family had been let down by Labour-run Haringey Council. Mrs Jethwa was told by Labour in 2006 that her 25 year old bathroom and kitchen would be replaced by 2010 but in reality work will not start until 2012.
Despite promises that all council properties in the London Borough of Haringey would receive new kitchens, bathrooms and windows by 2010, recent figures suggest that Haringey Council has failed to even meet a quarter of the homes needing urgent work. Work on homes in Harringay, Bounds Green, Seven Sisters, Fortis Green, Crouch End and Alexandra wards haven’t started at all.
At the most recent Full Council meeting on 22nd March, Labour councillor John Bevan failed to apologise to tenants that had not had Decent Homes work completed on their homes.
Lynne Featherstone, Liberal Democrat candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green, comments:
“Mrs Jethwa is only one of thousands of local residents who have been let down by Labour. They promised new kitchens, bathrooms and windows for all council houses, yet Mrs Jethwa’s home is a clear testament to that broken promise.”
Cllr Robert Gorrie, Leader of Haringey Liberal Democrats, adds:
“How can residents believe Labour in this election when most of the promises from last time have been broken?
“Labour has failed to start work on three quarters of council homes and that does not include homes in Harringay, Bounds Green, Seven Sisters, Fortis Green, Crouch End and Alexandra wards where they haven’t started at all.”
Lynne Featherstone joins special team practice with local award winning football club
Local Liberal Democrat candidate Lynne Featherstone kicked off her re-election campaign this week with a training session with local football club, Chettle Court Rangers, to celebrate their recent lottery award and ongoing youth work.
Lynne met with young footballers and club founders at the Ferry Lane pitch on Jarrow Road. The Stroud Green based football club was started by Chettle Court resident Ricardo Mfuka, to give the estate’s young people something to do after school. Most recently, the club has been awarded money from the Big Lottery Fund to extend its youth work to children with special educational needs.
Lynne Featherstone comments:
“Chettle Court Rangers do amazing work with kids from all over Haringey, across ages and abilities. It’s open to all and has a great ethos of wanting to help young people get a focus and passion in life.
“Ricardo really has something very special going on here, having started with a small team of young people from Stroud Green, he is now going from strength to strength and is branching out to help kids with special educational needs from across Haringey. Hats off for his truly inspirational work!”
