Local Liberal Democrats have thanked all those residents who voted for the successful Haringey YES! campaign last Thursday.
Haringey residents gave an overwhelming endorsement to the alternative vote, making it one of a handful of places to say yes. An all party campaign strongly supported by Haringey Liberal Democrats proved that the borough’s voters lead the way in pressing for democratic reform.
Liberal Democrat Council Group leader Robert Gorrie welcomed the result saying,
“It just shows what can be done if an informed and progressive electorate get the facts. It is a great shame that the No campaign tactics were all about attacking personalities, manufacturing scares and sowing confusion, rather than debating the issue. Full marks to Haringey residents for seeing through this.”
Lynne Featherstone MP added:
“It was very heartwarming to see the people of Haringey so resoundingly saying YES to fairer votes on Thursday – a little ray of sunshine on a pretty dark day. Sadly, the fantastic result we got here in Haringey was not echoed elsewhere.
“But I am pleased that locally, we not only had an above the London average turnout, but people really engaged with the campaign and the issues. I’m proud of Haringey and of the many engaged and enthusiastic residents who live here!”
An informed electorate are also seeing through the Lib Dems. Signing up to the trebling of tuition fees remains the most catastrophically regressive policy that will roll back any notions of social mobility for a generation. The net outcome will be an economically and socially enfeebled country rife with the dead wood of out of their depth Nick Clegg like public school boys. Willets has already let the mask slip with his suggestion that second choice public school candidates might be able to buy their way into universities of their choice. OK this was quickly shot down, but it reveals the mindset of the Government. This policy is the reckless wet dream of the shire Tories who’ve seized upon it to wage class war against meritocracy. Last night’s Standard featured a front page of the head of McDonalds advising young people to turn their backs on University debt and come a do a hospitality course at McDonalds Instead. Just what the monied right wing want, a servile underclass cut off from educational advancement. University funding is the policy that requires a massive U-turn before the impact everyone is telling you will happen happens.
Another Willets gem that reveals why tuition fees which hit young women hardest are such a wonderful thing….The Government’s social mobility strategy, which will conclude that movement between the classes had “stagnated” over the past 40 years, will be published next week and Mr Willetts blamed the entry of women into the workplace and universities for the lack of progress for men.
“Feminism trumped egalitarianism,” he said, adding that women who would otherwise have been housewives had taken university places and well-paid jobs that could have gone to ambitious working-class men……
Just why as minister for equality are you backing and endorsing these champions of inequality? Just why are you still our MP?
“It is a great shame that the No campaign tactics were all about attacking personalities, manufacturing scares and sowing confusion, rather than debating the issue.”
The total opposite of how Lynne works then huh? With her constant jibing and bullying of Haringey council.
“Haringey residents gave an overwhelming endorsement to the alternative vote”
No they didn’t! Most residents couldn’t care two hoots and a lot of the others voted to keep the present system. Hardly an overwhelming endorsement!!
