Liberal Democrat councillors in Haringey have expressed their deep concern at worrying statistics published recently showing that the Whittington Hospital, the nearest hospital to those in living in the west of the Borough, has the second highest nursing vacancy rate in London at a massive 18.9%. The Lib Dems are requesting a meeting with hospital officials to discuss the issue.
The figures, published in the Evening Standard, have shown vacancies at the Whittington to be almost double London’s average of 10% with only Newham Healthcare with a higher rate (19.7%).
The Lib Dems are concerned at the figures and what impact they are having on patients and staff at the hospital. Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesperson Lynne Featherstone is asking for a meeting with hospital officials to discuss the situation.
Lib Dem GLA health spokesperson, Lynne Featherstone comments:
“These figures are very worrying. Current nursing staff at the Whittington are working longer hours under greater stress, with money wasted on temporary staff.Unless action is taken quickly the situation will continue to deteriorate.”
Highgate councillor, Neil Williams, adds:
“The result of these vacancies at the Whittington may mean more nurses dropping out of the profession. Given the extra cost of temporary staff, it is not good value for money either.”
